Seedlings
Today we transferred scallions to the outdoor beds in the morning and then transferred no less than 800 broccoli plants in the afternoon. We then weeded a bit and fixed the deer fence so that it would open like a curtain. I don't know what caused it exactly but I'm very sore in my legs and back. The ground is farther down that you think. Bending over gets to be a challenge. Surprisingly we can plant all those seedlings in just a few hours between the four of us and someone is usually watering or getting more plants in the meantime. As the apprentices, we are noticeably slower than Polly and Ann, Polly's full time worker, but we're getting better. Just trying not to kill the things in the meantime.
Good Local Beer
Later in the evening we decided to venture off the farm to a place called Green's Garage that we'd heard so much about for some non-lettuce goods. It's such a great little place and the drive there was fantastic. We curved through large cow-occupied valleys, past the sides of forested mountains, and along a winding river with a rickety old swing bridge. Green's Garage is a one-roomed grocery store, just a little bigger than our cabin where you pick up what you need, write out your own bill, add up the tab, and leave the money in an envelope. They use the trust system and it seems to work. It's rather daring since their stuff is on the pricey side. We met a woman that helps out there and her husband and baby. (The baby stared at us like it could see into our souls.) Anyway, we bought yogurt, granola (!), cheese :) , a pear (gone already), and some other things to break up the salad monotony. We're getting closer to being able to bake!
